Dice notation is a compact way to describe a dice roll. The format is XdY+Z, where X is the number of dice, Y is the number of sides per die, and Z is an optional flat modifier. For example, 1d20 means roll one twenty-sided die, 2d6+3 means roll two six-sided dice and add three to the total, and 4d6kh3 means roll four six-sided dice and keep the highest three. Notation has been the standard tabletop shorthand since the earliest fantasy RPGs.

Type 4d6kh3 into the notation field and press Roll. The roller will roll four six-sided dice, sort them, grey out the single lowest die, and sum the highest three as your total. This is the traditional D&D ability-score method — you repeat 4d6kh3 six times to fill Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma, then assign the results to your character sheet. You can add a modifier too, e.g. 4d6kh3+1 for campaigns that grant a flat bonus.

Advantage is a D&D 5e mechanic where you roll two d20 and use the higher result — effectively increasing your chance of a natural 20 and reducing the chance of a nat 1. In notation this is 2d20kh1 (two d20, keep the highest one). Our roller automates this: set the mode toggle to Advantage, leave your notation as 1d20, and the roller internally rewrites the roll while preserving any flat modifier. Disadvantage works the opposite way using 2d20kl1 (keep lowest).

Yes — every roll uses crypto.getRandomValues, the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure random number generator, rather than Math.random. That means no seed predictability, no hidden patterns, and no measurable bias on the die sizes you actually play with (d4 through d100). Each individual die is rolled fresh, independently, so two dice in the same expression do not influence each other. The tool runs entirely in your browser, so your rolls are never transmitted to any server.

You can roll up to 100 dice in a single expression — for example 100d6 for a monster-hoard fireball or 20d20 for a big critical check. The 100-dice cap keeps the roller responsive on any device while still covering every realistic TRPG use case. If you type something larger like 200d20 the roller will show a Maximum 100 dice per roll message and preserve your notation so you can edit it down. For campaigns that genuinely need more, split the roll into multiple presses and sum the totals by hand.
