Which type of word should you pick?
The right part of speech depends on the game. Concrete nouns are the easiest to draw or act out, while verbs and adverbs work better for charades. Adjectives shine in writing exercises because they force a choice of tone.

How the words are chosen
The English list contains roughly 200 nouns, 140 verbs, 130 adjectives and 100 adverbs. They are common words chosen for games and teaching, roughly at A2 to B2 level, so nearly everyone can use them without a dictionary.
When you press Generate, the tool draws the number of words you asked for from the filtered pool without replacement. The draw uses crypto.getRandomValues, the same random source browsers use for security, so every word in the pool has exactly the same chance. Nothing is sent to a server.
Need words for a specific topic, like animals only or your own spelling list? Paste your words into the spin-the-wheel tool or the list randomizer instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is this random word generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you generate. It runs entirely in your browser.
Can I get random words that start with a certain letter?
Yes. Open Letter and length filters, choose a letter under Starts with, and every word in the batch will begin with it. This works for the English list.
Will the same word appear twice in one list?
No. Each batch is drawn without replacement, so a word appears at most once. If your filters leave fewer words than you asked for, you get every matching word and a note telling you so.
Are the words suitable for kids?
Yes. The lists were picked by hand for classrooms and family games. There are no rude, violent or adult words.
Can I generate random words in Chinese, Japanese or Korean?
Yes. Switch the site language to Chinese, Japanese or Korean and the generator uses a native word list for that language. You can still switch back to English words on those pages.
How do I pick one word from the list as a group?
Generate a batch, then press Put these on a wheel. The words open on a spinning wheel that you can spin in front of the class or share as a link.
How many words can I generate at once?
Up to 50 per batch. For longer lists, generate again and the previous five batches stay listed under the result.
